FOREWORD

Have you ever been in a wooded wilderness area in early morning just about dawn?  Have you seen the mist rising
from the surface of a pond on a crisp cold morning?  Imagine for a moment, stepping out of the woods and seeing a
pond with lily pads on the surface and cattails growing on the edges.  The thought arises in your mind that you could
be the only person to ever see this spot.  You know that there are large fish swimming in the pond that are just
waiting for you to bait a hook.  This is a vision of a country of the Gods -- an unspoiled, pristine, beautiful, and
relaxing place where you can get in touch with nature and your inner self.
There are still such places on Earth like this.  If you are lucky enough to be able to spend some time in nature’s
natural beauty you will find that it touches your soul.  It is in just such a setting that you can feel the presence of the
Great Spirit and know that he has been in your mind all along awaiting your recognition.
In this fast paced world of today with all the dangerous technology and the rampant rush for instant gratification there
is chaos and insanity loose that endangers us all.  It is past the time for mankind to grow up and mature, while
helping to change the world for the better.
The Great Spirit gave man this Earth as a home to provide for his every need.  The Earth is to be enjoyed and used
to sustain our life, yet we must learn to share the abundance that it offers.  We must also take care to protect the
environment and help maintain the balance of nature.  The earth is ours to use but we must look at it as a sacred
trust to be preserved for our children and their children.  Take care to protect the animal life and preserve their
habitat.  Learn what nature has to teach and learn to love instead of hate.  Take the time reenergize your soul and
commune with the Great Spirit.  Find this perfect place and take the first step on a path of truth, beauty, and
goodness.
One further note I will leave with you.  The people and events I write about in this book are strictly a work of fiction.
Yet the spiritual philosophy of the American Indians imparted through my writings is very real and inherent in the
grandfather teachings is the formula to becoming a perfected mortal while you are still on this Earth.  The psychic
phenomena I describe in my stories is also real--I have either experienced it myself or have witnessed it.  Remember--
sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.  Some of the things I have written about seem to be so fantastic that one
would believe that it has to be pure fantasy.  Yet I will tell you now that there are people and things on this Earth that
are much more fantastic than simple fantasy.

CHAPTER 1
“On your path through this short
                                                       life you will experience many
                                                     things and discover many truths.
Yet the greatest experience in any
mans life comes in the moment he
                                                    discovers the indwelling presence
of the Great Spirit in his own mind.”

The day had started badly for Hollis when the traffic had snarled up and cost him fifteen minutes.  He liked to get to
his office early so he could read any dispatches that had come in over night.  This morning he was running late and
this was the morning that his boss was due back from his vacation.  He wanted everything to go perfectly because he
was up for a promotion if he could maintain the status quo for the next couple of weeks.  Life was good here and he
wanted to stay for quite a while.
The current ambassador wanted to retire and go home and he was preparing Hollis for the changeover.  Hollis had
worked hard to show that he was worthy of being the ambassador but with the recent crises that had arisen he would
have to be extra careful not to do something that would hurt his chances.  The ambassador had cut his vacation a
few days short because of the current events that were taking place.
They were still a young colony with a small population compared to the rest of the world and they didn’t need
anything to happen that would cause them to be disenfranchised or gobbled up by a larger and more warlike nation.
The only bright spot on the horizon that he could see this morning was that the ambassador had not beaten him to
the office.  He realized that he was only a few minutes early but he was still the only one in the office.  He quickly
looked at the in-basket and saw that it was empty.  Things were starting to look better now because if there was
nothing in the basket at least there was nothing that would have to be taken care of immediately.  All too often there
would be an overnight dispatch that seemed to require urgent action from the people here.  He even allowed himself
to relax somewhat and smile as he went to the coffee maker and started a pot of coffee.
They had an excellent staff and the secretaries had all volunteered to make coffee and usually did.  Although he didn’
t have to do it Hollis liked to make the first pot himself because he liked it a little weaker than what everyone else
made.
While the coffee was brewing Hollis started reminiscing about the time his people had first come here.  It was about
two hundred years previous that their first pilgrims had landed.  The world was fairly primitive in those days and the
only means of traversing the oceans was on a sailing ship.  The government of the country in which they set up camp
was pretty primitive itself and like all the people of that day and age they were gold hungry.  Hollis had never
understood the attraction that people had for gold.  It was a soft metal and easy to work with but the only practical
use it actually had would be to be used in electronic circuits and no one used it for that purpose.  Granted it was a
scarce metal on Earth and it made pretty jewelry but the greed that it brought out in man to possess it was ludicrous.
The pilgrims had access to an unlimited supply of pure gold so it was an easy matter to buy a large country and
establish a sovereign nation for themselves.
Through the years they had kept abreast of world conditions and political activities and had eventually become one
of the nations that was a part of the United Nations.  They had seen the nations of the world involved in numerous
wars but had managed to avoid participation in any of them.  Hollis knew that greed for power was the root of all evil
and it was something that all governments on Earth had in common.  His people were evolved past such base
emotions and felt pity for the ones around them in the world that were still thus motivated.
There was always some excuse that the various governments gave as a reason to justify their starting a war with
another nation but the real reason was always to gain power of some kind or another.  It seemed to Hollis that the
bigger and more powerful a nation became the more the government of that country wanted to dictate to other
nations concerning the administration of their affairs.  In his observations he knew that generally governments
preached one thing for the rest of the world to follow and yet they did the opposite in governing their own people.  A
fine example was the United States.  They were quick to condemn other nations for not giving their people humane
treatment, yet they were taxing their own people to death while finding ways to strip them of the freedom their
constitution guaranteed.
He thought, “war is such a devastating thing to the citizens of any country.  It is always the common people who suffer
the consequences of the actions their governments precipitate.  In the past when Germany and Japan were trying to
become industrial giants they didn’t have the oil to support that industry so they started a war with the rest of the
world to try and steal it.
In more recent times one of the most powerful countries in the world, having vast resources of oil but hording it while
restricting drilling, started a war on a flimsy pretext.  When later protests prompted an investigation the pretext proved
to be lies.  Yet they gained their objective, which was to oust a dictator from power so they could dictate to the new
leaders how to disperse the oil they had.  It was a blatant misuse of power in an attempt to gain more power.”
Hollis poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down behind his desk to get ready to start the workday.  He started
thinking about the latest crises that had arisen in the world as a result of one country trying to dictate to another.
The excuses and pretexts they gave were so flimsy that it was causing quite a debate in the United Nations.  There
had been recent threats to various governments, including his own, that if they didn’t vote the way the aggressive
nation wanted them to, there would be dire consequences.
“I guess I will never understand greed,” Hollis thought.  “Why can’t people learn that hate and anger is not a good
attitude.  Greed is a form of insanity.  The Creator gave mankind this Earth to provide for his every need and yet man
wants to be greedy and not share it with his brothers.  When will these primitive people ever learn that love is the
better way?”
He knew that there were good people on Earth because every time there was a disaster everyone pitched in to help
the survivors.  He also knew that it was not the common man who caused the problems, but rather it was the
governments of those people.  When the madman that gained control in Germany killed millions of Jews it was not the
German people who were at fault.  He knew that most German people were good, hard working, compassionate
people.
He could not understand though, when the United States Government killed, harassed, stole their land, and tried to
eliminate the American Indians, nothing was done or said by the rest of the world.  Even the American people didn’t
seem concerned that millions of innocent people were slaughtered and the survivors were robbed of everything they
owned and consigned to reservations where they could be controlled.
“The United Nations gave the Jews a country in the Mid-East even though it has caused conflicts ever since,” Hollis
thought, “why don’t they make the United states give the American Indians a portion of the nation that was stolen
from them to repay them in part for the holocaust they perpetrated on them?  That was the most horrible holocaust
and premeditated genocide that has ever happened in the recorded history of the entire Earth yet no one seemed to
care, much less to want to rectify the situation.”
People started coming into the office and soon everyone was there but the ambassador.  One of the secretaries
brought a report she had typed and laid it on the desk. Hollis picked it up and glanced through it.  It contained the
latest information on the crises and he wanted to be aware of any new developments so he would be ready to convey
a concise statement to the ambassador when he arrived.
“Good morning Hollis,” the ambassador said as he came in.  “I got caught up in traffic or I would have been here
sooner.  Bring me up to date on the situation.”
“Good morning sir,” Hollis said.  “There hasn’t been much change since it started.  The only thing that has changed
is that they are now issuing threats to everyone in the assembly that is not in favor of voting with them.  How was your
vacation?  I’m sorry that you felt like you had to cut it short.”
“I had a great time,” he answered.  “There is nothing like the Yukon when the salmon are running.  All you have to do
is toss in a line and the fish jump on your hook.  If you have never eaten salmon freshly caught and roasted on a
campfire then you have never lived.  I had other reasons than the crises for cutting my vacation short though.  I have
decided that it is time to step down and give the job to you.
Have you picked out your second in command yet?  If not you should do so as soon as possible because I intend to
go home as soon as I can.  This current crisis is part of what caused my decision.  You will find that there is always
some crises or another in the world.  This is a good time for you to jump in and get your feet wet.  I have all the
confidence possible in your ability to handle the situation and the job.  What I would like for you to do is take your
family for a week in the Yukon and go fishing.  I will handle things for you while you are gone.  When you return I will
go home and let you have all the responsibility of this office.”
“I don’t quite know what to say,” Hollis said.  “Yes, I do have my helper picked out.  I think Jackson will be excellent for
the job.  I feel a little uneasy about leaving at this time while putting the burden on you but I am not about to turn
down a vacation.  It might be a long time before I will feel comfortable about leaving again after I am completely
responsible for this office.  Thank you for the opportunity.”
“No thanks is necessary,” the ambassador said.  “Ok, the job is now officially yours but I will stay and help out until
you get back from vacation.  Now get out of here and get started having fun.”

The man was sitting in a shabby old ford car.  Although the car was old and looked like it would fall apart any minute
it was in tiptop shape as far as mechanics were concerned.  The car was ideal for what it was used for and that was
spying on people.  Anyone who saw the car never gave it a second glance, which suited the man behind the wheel.
He was using a directional microphone to listen to what was being said in the building across the street.  The
information he had obtained about the new ambassador was worth all the wasted time he had sat there.  He listened
to the man call and make reservations to fly to the Yukon and also heard the man call for a guide to meet them at the
airport when they arrived.  Having all the information that he needed at the moment the man started the car and
drove away.
He drove aimlessly for a few blocks while he watched his rear view mirror to make sure he was not being followed.
Having decided that he was free from a tail he made a turn onto a freeway and sped across town.  He parked the car
in a parking garage and took the elevator to the fourth floor.  When the door opened he walked down the hall to
room number forty and went inside.  He went directly to his desk and picked up the phone and dialed a long distance
number.  A man answered it on the third ring.
“This is Klondike five six o three,” the man said that answered.
“Listen closely Claude; this is Joseph,” the man said.  “The new ambassador is Hollis and he will be arriving at your
airport with his wife and son tomorrow at one pm.  He called the same guide service that the old ambassador used
and they will be picking them up.  I want you to pick them up instead so you make sure you can delay the real guide.
After you pick them up take them to a back street and make them get out of the car and you keep the boy.  Take him
directly to the bush country and hide out with him for a week or so.  Take your cell phone with you and also take a
backup phone.  Take a portable generator so you can make sure you keep the batteries charged.  I will call you
when I have more instructions.  If you haven’t heard from me in three days you call me.  Now do you still have
pictures of Hollis and his family?  We don’t want any mistakes at this point in time.  You need to be able to recognize
them the minute you see them.”
“Ok Joseph, don’t sweat it, I will take care of it.  I know the perfect place to take the kid.  It is so far back in the bush
that they have to pipe in sunlight.  I guess you know that this is going to cost you plenty.  It’s bad enough to kidnap
someone but to take an ambassador’s kid will bring out the entire world on the hunt.”
“You will get paid Claude,” Joseph said.  “Just make sure you do like I told you.  We have too much to lose if you don’
t pull this off.  Don’t worry about anyone looking for you -- hell man once you hit the country no one will be able to
know where you went.  Just be sure I can call you so you can bring the kid back to town when the time is right.”
Joseph hung up the phone and turned to his keyboard and started typing the ransom note.  They already had
everyone else intimidated that they needed for the vote to go their way and when they pulled this off the little piss-ass
country that Hollis was from would be the last vote they needed.  He sat back and smiled as he thought about all the
power that they would gain in world politics.  He felt pretty smug at this point because if he pulled this off he would be
in line to take over the reins in his country.  The nice thing was that the United Nations would have to help him
accomplish the deed.  So long as the world used oil it would always be a bargaining chip and the country they were
going to take over had a massive supply to tap.  “I just hope Claude doesn’t mess this up for me,” he thought.  “I
hope he has enough smarts to know he must avoid hurting the kid no matter what.  So long as the kid is not hurt and
is returned safely no one will condemn us but if he is harmed it will blow the whole thing.”

Hollis and his wife were certainly glad that they were going to have a few days in the Yukon to relax and do some
fishing.  Their son was pretty excited also.  He was only twelve years old and this would be the first time he would go
fishing.  They had a restful night and slept well once they had gone to bed.  Now it was nearly time for them to get
themselves to the airport to catch their flight.
“Hurry and grab the other bag dear,” Hollis said.  “The taxi is outside now and if we don’t hurry we won’t get there on
time.”
“I have it dear,” she answered, “Just go on out while I make sure everything is turned off.  Be sure Joey doesn’t leave
anything.”
The taxi driver helped load the bags in the trunk and after everyone was belted in their seats he drove off toward the
airport.  They made the trip relatively fast for that time of day and they arrived in plenty of time to get checked in.
Soon they were boarding the plane and getting seated.  The flight would take a little over two hours so they sat back
and relaxed as much as they could with the excitement they had anticipating their vacation.
“I’m so glad you are now the ambassador,” she said.  “I will miss your boss and his wife though.”
“Well Martha,” Hollis said, “I guess we all will miss them but they want to live out the rest of their life back home.  He
has always missed the home they left when they came here and he is anxious to get back.  The last word I received
was that it would not be less than a hundred years before the nova occurs and more likely it will be close to two
hundred.  There has been mass migration off planet and it is nearly deserted now but there are still people that don’t
want to leave.  We are lucky that this is a young planet and solar system that we chosen because we can establish a
good home here for a lot of our people.  It is also fortunate that we don’t look very different than the natives and by
arriving when we did we were able to get established without arousing any suspicion about being alien to this planet.
It is important though that we never allow anyone to suspect us.  I wish we didn’t have to be involved in world politics
but if we wish to maintain our nation we don’t
have much choice.”
“I miss the old home too,” she said.  “Still though it will be destroyed when the sun novas.  I don’t want to go back and
take a chance that the scientists might be wrong about the time frame.  This is a young planet but the people here
are also primitive in their emotional behavior.  I wish they were more spiritual in their thinking and less into the baser
emotions.  At times it seems to me that only greed, selfishness, hate, and anger, motivates everyone here.”
“Yes I guess it does appear to be that way at times,” Hollis answered.  “You must understand though, that there are a
lot of spiritual minded people here and eventually they will all grow past negative values.  Until that time we will just
have to be patient and stay on guard to prevent any danger to ourselves.  If we teach our young children the way of
love, compassion, and harmony, then perhaps the example they set will be a good influence on others they come into
contact with.  With enough love all will change and the world will become a harmonious place on which to live.”

Claude waited until about twenty minutes before the plane was due to depart and then he made a phone call to the
guide service.
“Yes that is right,” he said.  “We have a friend that will meet us at the airport.  We will check into a hotel and we will
call you in the morning so you can send the guide to pick us up.  We want to get a good nights sleep and do a little
shopping before we hit the bush.”
“That went smooth enough,” he thought.  “Now all I have to do is pick them up when their plane arrives.  Joseph is
sure a worrywart.  As worried as he is over this deal I think
I will try to boost the price a bit.  I will be careful not to piss him off though cause those mid-east bastards are crazy as
a bedbug and it doesn’t take much to make them want to kill you.”
He went to the elevator and took it down to the ground floor and went outside to his car.  The drive to the airport
wouldn’t take long so he decided that he would make sure the four by four was parked where he had left it.  He would
use the car to pick up Hollis and his family and then after he had dumped them he would change vehicles.  He drove
around for a bit while he kept an eye on his rearview mirror.  After making sure no one was following him he drove to
the back street where the four by four was parked.  Sure enough it was still there and looked like it was undisturbed.
He had loaded it before he parked it so he had everything he needed for an extended stay in the country.  He had
his generator and gas to run it.  He had food supplies, cooking equipment, camping gear, along with a high-powered
rifle and some fishing gear.  He also had a couple of knifes and some rope.  “This is going to be fun,” he thought.  “I
get to have a nice camping trip away from the hassles of city life and a dumb rag-head is going to pay me a lot of
money to boot.  I shouldn’t have any problem with the kid -- all I will have to do is keep him tied to a tree with
handcuffs and a tether chain and lock.  I guess I will go have a nice breakfast now cause the plane won’t be here for
another couple of hours.”

As the plane started its descent twelve-year-old Joey was looking out the window watching the clouds pass by.  He
kept looking out at the passing scenery until the plane touched down.  This was the most exciting thing he had ever
done.  Of course he had flown in a plane before when they had moved after his dad got the assistants job at the
embassy but he was so young at the time he didn’t remember it.  He was thrilled that they were going to be catching
some big salmon.  He had never been fishing and he could hardly wait to get out in the wilderness country by the
river where the fish were running.
All his friends were envious and wished they could be there instead of being stuck at home.  None of them had been
fishing either so that made their envy all the more satisfying to Joey.  Joy was a good boy and he was well
mannered.  If he had any faults it was being smug when he got to do something that his friends had not done.  His
parents knew that he would outgrow that bit of negativity in his personality though.  They were teaching him spiritual
values and he was naturally compassionate and caring.
After waiting for their luggage to be unloaded they picked it up and walked outside and Hollis started looking around
for their guide.  A man standing a few feet away walked over to them after he had looked closely at some
photographs he held in his hand.
“Hello,” he said.  “You must be Hollis and Martha Delgado.  And this must be Joey.  I am Claude Barnhart from the
guide service and I will be taking you camping and fishing.   Let me help you with your bags -- I have my car parked
right over here.”
It took only a few moments to get the luggage stored in the trunk of the car and get everyone buckled into their
seats.  Claude looked to make sure it was safe and pulled away from the curb.  He was also keeping a close eye on
all the cars around him to make sure no one was following as he left the airport.  The Delgado family was looking at
the buildings they were passing and they were making comments on the architectural designs.  There were some
extremely pretty buildings as well as some interesting scenery on the route Claude was taking.  He was glad that they
were looking at the sights instead of him having to talk to them.  He was taking somewhat of a risk with the car he was
driving since it was stolen from the long term parking at the airport.  He knew the man who owned it and knew that he
would be gone for two weeks.  He was driving carefully so he would not do anything that would cause a policeman to
pull him over.  It would be a hassle if that happened and he didn’t want anything to go wrong at this stage in the
game.  It didn’t take long for Claude to drive to a back road that didn’t have any houses for a long stretch.  Making
sure that there were no cars in sight and no houses anywhere near he pulled over and parked the car.  Hollis looked
at him as if he wondered why they were stopping here.  He didn’t have long to wonder though because it soon
became apparent.
Claude pulled his handgun out and pointed it at Hollis and then said, “Ok mister Delgado, you and your wife can get
out of the car now.  The boy will stay with me for a little while.  If you follow the instructions that will be called to you on
your cell phone you won’t have anything to worry about.  Now get out of the car.”
“Please Mister,” Martha said.  “Don’t take our son.  Please, just let us all get out of the car.  We will do anything you
say but please don’t hurt my son.”
“Hollis you know it won’t do any good to argue,” Claude said.  “Just get your wife out of the car and do as you will be
instructed to do.  It would not be advisable for you to call the police either because that could result in your son being
hurt.”
Hollis and Martha got out of the car and Claude drove off with the boy.  Joey wasn’t saying anything but he looked
scared and as he looked at his mother through the car window he could see that she was crying.
“Where are you taking me,” Joey asked?  “Why are you doing this?  My mother is quite upset and she is crying.  I don’
t think you are a very nice man.”
“Shut up kid,” Claude snarled.  “If you want to stay in one piece and remain healthy you will just shut up and don’t
bother me.  If you give me any lip I will beat the hide off your back.  If you cause me any problems I might see just how
many pieces of your ears I can cut off before you will be crying like a girl.”
Joey didn’t say another word but his eyes got big and he looked like he wanted to cry.  Claude drove in a circuitous
route to get to where he had parked his four by four truck.  He drove past it for a ways while making sure no one was
around and then he finally turned around and went back to it and parked the car.  He quickly yanked Joey out of the
car and threw him into the cab of the truck.  He then pulled out his handcuffs and placed Joey’s hand in one and
hooked the other cuff to the doorframe.  He didn’t say a word to Joey this whole time.  He just did what he did and
drove off toward the country.
He knew a place up river that was extremely hard to get to even in a four-wheel drive vehicle.  It was an excellent
place to camp though because no one ever went there.  It was a desolate piece of country with no houses or towns of
any kind within fifty miles.  He had flown over the spot one time and saw the ideal place to get away from civilization to
relax.  He marked the position on his map so he could find it anytime he wanted to go there.  He would take the boy
there and just camp out for a few days until he got some more instructions from Joseph.

Hollis knew that he would have to get the police involved as soon as possible.  He knew that the only way he would
ever see Joey alive again would be if the police could find him and capture the kidnapper.  He also knew that the
people behind the kidnapping was most likely the ones that had been threatening everyone to get them to vote in
their favor.  He knew that he would never give in to their demands even if it cost him his own life because one could
never be safe or free again if they ever gave in to evil and corruption.  He knew that if they could not rescue Joey in
time no matter what he did the people who kidnapped the boy would kill him.  It took them just a little less than an
hour to walk back up the road to find a telephone.  Luckily he had some change in his pocket and he got the
operator on the third ring.
“Listen closely,” he said.  “I am a visiting diplomat and my son has just been kidnapped.  I need you to connect me
with the appropriate authority.”
“This is the office of the FBI,” someone said, “How may I help you?  What department do you wish to be connected
to?”
“My name is Hollis Delgado and my son has just been kidnapped,” Hollis said.  “I am a visiting diplomat and I think
that international terrorists are involved.  I also need someone to pick my wife and myself up.  The kidnapper
stranded us on the side of the road.  The telephone where I am calling from is on the corner of thirty-second street
and wolf creek drive.”
“Stay where you are,” the man said.  “Someone will be there shortly to pick you up and bring you to our
headquarters.”
They had little choice but to do as the man had suggested so they waited.  It seemed to be an interminable long wait
but in reality it was only about fifteen minutes.  They talked some about what they were facing while they waited.
“Do you think it was wise to get the authorities involved Dear,” Martha asked?  “The man said that he would hurt Joey
if we called the police.”
“We didn’t have any choice Darling,” Hollis answered.  “The people we are dealing with are fanatics and life has little
meaning to them.  They will kill Joey regardless of what we do if the police can’t rescue him in time to prevent it.  They
will keep him alive while the negotiations are going on but as soon as they get what they want they will kill him.  I think
that it is a good thing that the Yukon is a part of the United States and the FBI is now aware of the situation.  I don’t
like the way the United States interferes with other countries and tries to dictate to everyone how to run their
countries but the FBI is an extremely efficient organization.  They are generally aware of what is going on in the world
and keep an eye on all the known rebels.  I just pray that they will be able to help us and get Joey back to us safe
and sound.”

                                                            VARIATION ON A THEME

The year that Johnny was eleven years old and school had just let out for the summer he was excited that now he
could go on a camping trip up the valley with his grandfather.  He dearly loved to camp out and catch game and fish
to eat and walk in the woods with his old grandfather.  The old man had told him that they would be able to go in a
couple of days and he was really looking forward to it.
Late that evening they were setting on the front porch while the old man was sorting through his fishing lures to
select the ones they would be taking with them.  An old pickup drove through the front gate and up the path to the
house and parked in front of the yard.  It was the neighbor just to the north of them and Johnny was wondering what
the man wanted.  It was not long before he knew and he wasn’t exactly thrilled with the answer.
“Sorry to intrude without calling,” he said.  “Something has come up and I didn’t know who else to turn to so I came to
see you.”
“What seems to be the problem,” Johnny’s grandfather asked?  “What ever it is I will try to help you if I can.”
The man hesitated for a moment while looking worried and then said, “my mother has taken a turn for the worse.  Her
heart is giving her problems and she needs an operation.  The doctor has said that it will be relatively easy to fix the
problem but that she will have to remain in bed and stay relaxed for a while afterward.  My problem is that I will have
to go there and be with her for at least a month to help her until she can get up and around.  I am glad that I can go
to help her but I need to plow my south field and get it ready for the winter rye that I need to plant this fall.  The
problem is if I don’t get it plowed and the top harrowed so it can be ready for seed it will be too late when I get back.  I
was really counting on that winter rye to graze my cattle on and I don’t know what I can do.  I know it is asking a lot
and I don’t know what plans you have but I was wondering if I could hire you to plow the field for me and get it ready
for seeding?”
“Don’t worry about it my friend,” the old man said.  “I didn’t have anything planned that can’t wait for a couple of
weeks while I plow your field.  You don’t have to think about paying me anything either.  It is in times like these that
people need to help each other.  I will plow your field but I don’t want any money.  Just go to take care of your mother
and I will take care of your field.”
After the man had left Johnny just sat there in disbelief.  He knew that his grandfather would start plowing the man’s
field the next morning and that they would not be going on the camping trip they had planned.  He was so
disappointed that he just sat there with a sad look on his face but was unable to say anything.  His grandfather
looked at Johnny and saw the disappointment written all over the sad features on his face.  He didn’t say anything for
a while but just let the boy sit there and think about things.  He continued to sort his fishing lures and finally put them
back in the tackle box.  He had thought about the things he wanted to say to the boy and now he spoke.
“I know you are disappointed my son,” he said.  “Yet no amount of resentment will change even one aspect of the
situation.  There will be many times in your life that you will be faced with disappointment and you must always be
able to look further than the surface of things and see the spiritual side of it.  The greatest thing any man can do is to
help a friend in time of need.  This is a lesson that mankind is slow in learning but for you and me we should be able
to see the truth of things and accept the responsibility of a son  of the Great Spirit and the brotherhood of all his
children.
We will still be able to go on our camping trip in a little while but first we must help our brother in his time of need.  It
will only be a slight delay of a couple of weeks and the woods, the creek, the fish and game will still be there for us to
enjoy.  How much more will we be able to enjoy a pleasurable outing while we know we have shown our love of the
Great Spirit by helping another of his children.
It seems hard to you right now but if you will look at it with the eyes of the spirit and feel the love in your heart and
soul grow from the goodness the Great Spirit is giving us then you will know the joy of the real meaning of life and
being on the path of truth, beauty, and goodness.”
Johnny tried to understand just what the old man was trying to tell him and after a little time he felt better.  In a few
years after he had grown in his mind and matured some he understood better what he had been told.  He never
forgot the words his grandfather spoke that evening and many times in his life he was reminded of them.  He was
always thankful that his grandfather had started him on the path of perfection and he gave thanks to the Great Spirit
every day for leading him ever onward to becoming an Impeccable Warrior.
